Census Shows Uptick In California Same-Sex Couples
SAN FRANCISCO (KCBS) – On the eve of San Francisco's Pride weekend comes amid new Census figures that include the first detailed tally of gay and lesbian couples in California.
The last ten years have seen a 10 percent decline in the number of families that include a man and a woman raising kids. It's now at 23.4 percent, while more than a quarter of California homes consist of a married couple with no children.
Meanwhile the US Census Bureau reported 125,500 same-sex couples are in California with 34,000 in the Bay Area alone.
KCBS' Holly Quan Reports:
"San Francisco County had the highest concentration of same-sex couples, followed by Sonoma and Alameda, so the top three counties are all in the Bay Area," said Gary Gates, a demographer with the Williams Institute at the UCLA School of Law.
In fact, Guerneville in Sonoma County ranks second behind Palm Springs as the city with the most same sex couples per 1,000 households.
Meanwhile the census also found the number of multi-generational households up 30 percent in the state, with the largest concentrations in the Asian and Latino communities.
