Car Ends Up In Water After Police Chase From SF To Berkeley; Driver Arrested
BERKELEY (CBS SF) -- Police arrested a San Francisco man Tuesday night following a high-speed chase across the Bay Bridge which began when he allegedly slammed his car into a South of Market gas station and ended when he drove his car into water at Berkeley Aquatic Park
Authorities said the incident began at a gas station on 6th and Harrison Streets at 9:30 p.m.
Police say 50-year-old Mick Lee got into an argument with a homeless man at the gas station. That homeless man allegedly slashed the tires of Lee's car. Lee then complained to the station employees, who would later tell police that he was acting erratically.
Police said Lee got back into his car, rammed it into the front of the station and then drove off.
California Highway Patrol vehicles chased him onto eastbound Interstate Highway 80 across the San Francisco-Oakland Bay Bridge to Emeryville. Lee then took the Shellmound Street exit and continued on surface streets to Berkeley, according to the CHP.
Officials say Lee drove off the roadway near Ashby Avenue and into the water at Berkeley Aquatic Park. While car became submerged, Lee was able to escape from his vehicle and began swimming away from police. He surrendered at 11:30 p.m. and was taken to a hospital.
Lee was booked into the San Francisco County Jail and charged with vandalism, felony evasion and hit-and-run charges.
