Elderly Woman Plows Car Oakland Hills Home, Sparks Fire

OAKLAND (CBS SF) -- An elderly woman drove her car into home in the Oakland Hills Wednesday afternoon, sparking a garage fire, a fire battalion chief said.

Crews responded to reports of a car into a house in the 8100 block of Hansom Drive around noon, a fire dispatcher said.

Oakland fire Battalion Chief James Bowron said a woman in her late 80s was driving when she lost control of her car and plowed through the home's garage, crashing into a gas meter.

The crash sparked a fire and released a flow of gas from the meter, and flames spread throughout the garage.

A neighbor helped the woman out of her car, and she was treated and released at the scene, Bowron said.

Crews attacked the blaze and prevented it from spreading to other parts of the house. No residents were at home at the time of the crash.

The stubborn gas-fueled fire was controlled shortly after 3 p.m., according to the fire department.

Fire and PG&E personnel remained at the scene at 3:30 p.m. working to cap the damaged gas line.
