Capitola Still Waits On Disaster Relief From Storms
CAPITOLA (KCBS) – Capitola has not yet received disaster relief following those large storms in March that led to flash floods. Damage following the March floods is estimated at $17 million, and Capitola's emergency reserves are gone following flood repairs.
"The State of California has sought federal support through FEMA," said Assemblyman Bill Monning. "And Mike Dayton, [acting secretary of the California Emergency Management Agency] says that they expect a response from FEMA late this week or early next week."

The state declared a disaster following the tsunami and destruction at the Santa Cruz Harbor and invoked the California Disaster Assistance Act, where the state offers aid once the feds provide funding. That didn't, however, happen with the Capitola floods.
"We certainly recognize that the federal government has its hands full looking at flood and tornado damage in the Midwest," said Monning. "Our hearts go out to those families and communities, but our job here in California is to try to get support for our impacted communities."
Capitola is considering cutting programs as it struggles with flood costs in already tough economic times.
