Candlelight Vigil Held In Oakland For Arizona Shooting Victims
OAKLAND (KCBS) - Hundreds gathered outside Oakland City Hall Wednesday evening to pay tribute to victims of the Tucson, Arizona shootings and to condemn violence in all its forms.
The names of the six killed in the Jan. 8 shootings were read aloud. Then Community leaders said the path toward violence prevention must begin with civil engagement at the local level.
KCBS' Margie Shafer Reports:
"We must acknowledge that we also have work to do as peacemakers. We have work to do in our community," said Congresswoman Barbara Lee.
Lee said the shooting that severely wounded Arizona Congresswoman Gabrielle Giffords would in no way discourage her from meeting the public face to face.
"Heed the call of public duty. Rise above fear and uncertainty, and let us continue to serve with honor," Lee said.
Other speakers called for stricter gun controls and improved mental health services.
