Can The Tech Community Laugh At Itself? Watch This Satirical Video For The WellDeserved App
SAN FRANCISCO (KCBS)— Sometimes it's hard to tell where reality ends and comedy begins. A fake app called WellDeserved is lampooning the Bay Area's shared-economy companies.
The makers did such a good job with a recent promo video their entry won at last month's Comedy Hack Day.
Craig Cannon from Cultivated Wit, which produces the comedy event, said most of the apps and tech products at Comedy Hack Day are real.
WellDeserved: A Marketplace For Privilege (Video)
"When we started Comedy Hack Day a couple of years ago, we found that the tech space was just very dry and didn't have a lot of personality and so we decided to create an event just about that," he said.
The tech sector is a fairly rich vein to work, one example being HBO's 'Silicon Valley' and its skewering of the tech world's pomposity and arrogance. It almost seems too easy.
A lot of people think the WellDeserved app is real, but we still wonder does Silicon Valley have the ability to laugh at itself? Cannon says he hopes so.
The promo mocks the culture of free lunches, privilege and entitlement to things like free lunches and shuttle bus rides to and from work, but it even goes into concepts of white-male privilege and what is and isn't earned. Cannon said for the most part the response and feedback to the satirical video has been positive.
As far as the video goes, you can watch it yourself and decide if it's too close to reality.
