Caltrain To Add Weekend Service

SAN CARLOS (KCBS) -- Public transit agencies throughout the Bay Area have had to consider service cuts over the past year in an effort to close budget deficits.

But Caltrain is actually adding service, at least for the next three months. The agency is adding weekend baby bullet service between San Francisco and San Jose beginning on January 1 because Caltrain spokeswoman Christine Dunn said riders have asked for it.

"When we went out to our community meetings about our service changes and fare increases," said Dunn. "This is something that people suggested as a way to increase revenue."

KCBS' Melissa Culross Reports:

Dunn said current weekend service will be unaffected and the baby bullet service runs will offer riders an extra option.

"We're going to have a train in each direction in the morning and one in each direction in the evening," she said. "So there will be a total of four trains. Each train is going to make seven stops. They'll stop at Sunnyvale, Mountain View, Palo Alto, Redwood City, Hillsdale, San Mateo and Millbrae."

The weekend baby bullet service currently is a pilot program. Caltrain officials will assess whether or not to continue the service, which will use the same fare structure as regular weekend Caltrain service, after three months.
