Caltrain Offers Weekend Baby Bullet Service

SAN FRANCISCO (KCBS) -- If you're looking for a quick way to travel between San Francisco and San Jose, you may want to give Caltrain a try. The transit agency is now offering limited Baby Bullet Service on weekends.

The idea was a big hit with a number of riders, boarding trains at San Francisco's Caltrain Station 4th and King Streets.

Caltrain spokeswoman Christine Dunne said they were actually mulling over plans to eliminate weekend service altogether, as a cost cutting move just a few months back.

"We went out to the public and this is a suggestion that came from them," said Dunne.

Baby Bullets can make the trip in half the time it takes a normal run because they make only seven stops instead of 22.

Dunne said they decided to add two round trips between San Francisco and San Jose to the schedule, one in the morning and one in the evening, in addition to its regular weekend schedule.

One rider, San Jose resident Lindsey, who was headed home from San Francisco after a night of partying and little sleep thought the idea was perfect.

"I took the train up here yesterday, it took about an hour," said Lindsey.

Dunne said they'll re-evaluate their move in three months and if it's profitable, it will stay. If not, it will go. In addition, there are some other hard decisions that will have to be made soon.

Dunne added that the possibility of eliminating weekend service is still looming.

"We're working on our budget for the next fiscal year and that's something that we're going to take a heard look at," she said.

Caltrain is expected to make a decision by March.
