Caltrain Hits, Kills Pedestrian In Sunnyvale

SUNNYVALE (BCN) -- A northbound Caltrain vehicle hit and killed a pedestrian in Sunnyvale Thursday night, an agency spokeswoman said.

The man, a 52-year-old Sunnyvale resident, was killed around 6:45 p.m. at the crossing at Mary and Evelyn avenues, Caltrain spokeswoman Tasha Bartholomew said.

He appears to have intentionally stepped in front of the train, she said.

Nobody on the train was injured.

Trains single-tracked around the collision site at reduced speeds until 9:45 p.m., Bartholomew said.

Caltrain experienced delays of up between 30 and 90 minutes throughout the evening, she said.

This was the third Caltrain fatality of the year.

Eleven people died last year on the Caltrain tracks, and there were 19 fatalities in 2009.

"No matter what the circumstances, if is always regrettable when a life is lost," Caltrain said in a statement.
