Caltrain Board Postpones Vote On Cuts
SAN CARLOS (KCBS / CBS SF) _ Caltrain's board of directors Thursday postponed voting on a set of proposed service cuts and fare hikes intended to save the agency from financial disaster.
The Peninsula Corridor Joint Powers Board voted unanimously at its meeting in San Carlos to put off the vote on the money saving measures for two weeks.
KCBS' Tim Ryan Reports:
"We have to be able to sell to the public that we have the model, and you have to support it," said San Mateo County Supervisor and Caltrain Director Adrienne Tissier.
Caltrain riders packed the board's meeting room and an overflow room to voice their opinions on the proposed changes, which include the suspension of service at the Capitol, Hayward Park and Bayshore stations.
"Today in the market there are companies like Hewlett Packard, Microsoft, Google, Twitter, and Facebook, who are looking for space now," said developer Lisa Lewis. "They want to be near transit in 24/7 environments. They don't want to be on the old campuses that are far away from train stations anymore."
Speakers at the meeting overwhelmingly opposed the service cuts.
Other proposed changes include increasing Caltrain's base fare by 25 cents.
