California Universities, Colleges Now Back Greater Disclosure
SACRAMENTO (CBS / AP) -- California's university and college systems are dropping their opposition to a bill that would force their foundations to make more records accessible to the public.
Sen. Leland Yee says the University of California, California State University, and community college systems have agreed to back his bill, SB8, to close a loophole in state public records laws.
The San Francisco Democrat announced a compromise Wednesday.
The issue made national news last year when the CSU Stanislaus Foundation refused to release its speaking contract with former Alaska Gov. Sarah Palin. A judge eventually ordered the auxiliary university group to release the information after a lawsuit.
Yee's bill would make most financial records, contracts, and correspondence from nonprofits subject to the same public disclosure requirements as higher education institutions.
