California Ski Resorts Hiring More Locals
LAKE TAHOE (KCBS) - As Tahoe resorts report the first snow of the season, operators have been holding job fairs this as they look to hire around 15,000 seasonal workers, many of them local.
Seasonal positions run the gamut from hospitality and food service jobs inside resort facilities to work outdoors on the mountain, said Bob Roberts, Executive Director of the California Ski Industry Association.
Seasonal jobs on the slopes were once the province of foreign workers, Roberts said, until the recession.
"For the last several years, because of the economy, we've been able to be much more successful through our local hiring."
Last year's disappointing winter meant fewer out-of-town hires. The resorts are hoping the weather will cooperate for a stronger ski season.
"We're looking for everything from people who can work within the ski area itself in terms of the jobs in hospitality and food and beverage and the various other elements, as well as to work on the mountain," said Roberts.
KCBS' Melissa Culross Reports:
"A lot of the more technical jobs are year-round, but nevertheless, we do have a number and a variety of openings," he said, including some positions outside the Tahoe area itself.
