California Hopes To Ease Path To Historically Black Schools
SAN FRANCISCO (CBS/AP) — Leaders of California's vast community college system are hoping to make it easier for students to transfer to historically black colleges and universities in other states.
The system's Board of Governors is scheduled to approve an agreement on Tuesday that would guarantee students who complete certain prescribed courses at the state's 112 two-year schools a seat at nine historically black colleges and universities in the South and Midwest.
Paige Marlatt Dorr, a spokeswoman for system chancellor Brice Harris, says the arrangement is believed to be the first of its kind between a community college system and multiple historically black institutions of higher learning.
African Americans made up 7 percent of California's 2.3 million community college students last year. In 2011, 500 students from California transferred to historically black schools to complete their studies.
