California Among Top States For Shark Attacks
SAN FRANCISCO (CBS / AP) — An annual shark attack study reported the number of shark attacks increased worldwide last year -- with almost half the attacks, 36, occuring in the United States.
Leading shark experts said Tuesday that Florida topped the U.S. with 13 attacks.
There were five attacks in North Carolina and four each in California, Hawaii and South Carolina.
Of the four attacks in California, the most notable was the October attack by a great white shark off the central California coast that killed a body-surfer.
Worldwide, 79 shark attacks were reported in 2010, the most since 2000. Six of those attacks involved fatalities.
