Cal State To Begin Offering Doctorates In Nursing
SAN JOSE (KCBS) - California State University will begin offering doctorates in nursing at several of its campuses.
The CSU Board of Trustees on Wednesday voted to create the doctorate in nursing practice, or DNP, to train faculty who can teach at the state's nursing schools.
KCBS' Mike Colgan Reports:
"This is super exciting news for all of us, everyone in the Bay Area, because as we know, when Baby Boomers retire we're going to face a nursing shortage," said San Jose State University spokeswoman Pat Lopes Harris. "With this new degree program we will be able to, in essence, train the teachers who will then train the students that will become the nurses of tomorrow."
Dr. Jayne Cohen, director of the nursing school said that there will be a shortage of 100,000 nurses over the next 10 years.
"I think it's great that people who want a doctorate in nursing don't have to go up to San Francisco or down to L.A., or leave the state. They can stay right here in San Jose, which just creates a lot more options for students here in the area," said second year nursing student Billy Urman.
The program will start next year.
