Cal Men's Basketball Assistant Coach Suspended After Sexual Harassment Claim
BERKELEY (CBS SF) -- Termination proceedings have been initiated against University of California at Berkeley's men's basketball assistant coach Yann Hufnagel after a finding that he violated the university's sexual harassment policy, UC Berkeley officials said Monday.
UC Berkeley officials said head coach Cuonzo Martin initiated proceedings against Hufnagel following the finding by the university's Office for the Prevention of Harassment and Discrimination.
Hufnagel has been relieved of his duties effectively immediately pending the outcome of the termination process and won't travel with the Cal basketball team to its upcoming NCAA tournament game on Friday against University of Hawaii.
Hufnagel is in his second year as an assistant coach at UC Berkeley. He previously served as an assistant at Vanderbilt University, Harvard University and the University of Oklahoma.
UC Berkeley officials said they will distribute a redacted version of the investigation of Hufnagel later Monday after the complainant against him has been provided with a copy and has had an opportunity to review the findings.
Hufnagel is the latest in a string of UC Berkeley officials to come under fire for alleged sexual misconduct.
On Friday, UC Berkeley law school dean Sujit Choudhry resigned from his post following allegations that he had sexually harassed his executive assistant for months in 2014 and 2015.
Astronomy professor Geoffrey Marcy resigned in October amid allegations that he had sexually harassed students for a decade.
Following Choudhry's resignation, University of California President Janet Napolitano announced a new review process for sexual harassment allegations against faculty and administrators.
Napolitano also ordered the removal Friday of Graham Fleming from his post as Berkeley Global Campus ambassador. Fleming obtained the position after resigning last April as UC Berkeley vice chancellor for research following a sexual harassment claim.
UC Berkeley spokesman Dan Mogulof told The Daily Californian the campus is currently handling 17 sexual harassment investigations.
