"We are the first state to have our troops trained and operational for this mission," said Schwarzenegger.
260 Soldiers of the California National Guard will start protecting the border as of September 1st. The governor says the border is a sieve because the federal government has failed in its mission to keep people from crossing illegally.
"People cross the border with machine guns, and automatic weapons - all kinds of weapons," said Schwarzenegger. "They're coming in with drugs and doing human trafficking. That has to stop."
The governor says politicians in Washington need to have the courage to pass comprehensive immigration reform, even in an election year.
