Businesses Brace For Reduced Revenue If Caltrain Trims Service
SAN CARLOS (KCBS) - Some small business owners along Caltrain's rail corridor have expressed concerns that proposed cuts in transportation funding and service would impact their bottom lines.
Small mom-and-pop shops worry they stand to lose the most.
KCBS' Mark Seelig Reports:
The Depot Cafe in San Carlos, a cozy spot with seating for about 50 people, is one example of a business that relies on Caltrain riders for revenue.
"They always come here, get something to go or you know, have something, breakfast, before they take a train," explained owner Mary Abolmoluki.
She worried that could all change, depending on what Caltrain ultimately decides to do to address a $30 million budget shortfall. There are several options on the table, including cuts in service and closing stations.
"They would have a noticeable impact if there was significant cuts in the rail schedule," Jim Bigelow with the Redwood City/San Mateo County Chamber of Commerce summed up the potential financial pain to nearby shops if Caltrain moves forward with reductions.
Abolmoluki, who opened her cafe in 1983, was hoping for the best but bracing for the worst.
"Well, I guess I'll have to close up my business and move out of here. I don't know what else I can say."
Caltrain was expected to make decisions about its budget shortfall within the next few months.
