Burned Body Found By Santa Clara County Deputies Near Morgan Hill

SANTA CLARA COUNTY (CBS SF) -- Santa Clara County sheriff's deputies were investigating the discovery Thursday of a badly burned body west of Morgan Hill apparently set on fire by someone who then left the scene, a sheriff's spokesman said.

Deputies got a 911 call at 8:11 a.m. from a witness who reported seeing flames coming from the body 20 to 30 feet off of Oak Glen Avenue near the Chesbro Reservoir, sheriff's Sgt. Kurtis Stenderup said.

"It was a call about someone on fire," Stenderup said. "It was definitely recently set."

Some people in the area of Oak Glen Avenue reported noticing smoke, pulled over and then discovered the burning body on an embankment off of the shoulder of the roadway, deputies said.

The body was so badly charred that authorities were unable to immediately establish the gender of the person, which will be determined by the medical examiner's office, according to Stenderup.

Deputies received conflicting reports from witnesses about suspicious vehicles near the scene and were not immediately releasing any information about a suspect vehicle, Stenderup said.

Investigators are asking anyone who may have seen a vehicle there this morning to notify sheriff's dispatch at (408) 299-3233.
