Burglars Break Into Police Officer's Home In Antioch, Steal Guns
ANTIOCH (CBS 5) – Antioch Police told CBS 5 that burglaries in the area have become so widespread, that even cops are victims. The latest incident occurred Wednesday, when police said thieves stole property, including guns, from an officer's home.
According to authorities, the officer came home Wednesday night to discover three burglars ransacking his home in the southeastern part of the city.
"(The officer) interrupted the burglary, and three subjects had fled out of the back of the home," said Capt. Leonard Orman of the Antioch Police Department.
Police said the officer chased the burglars, but was forced to stop after one of the suspects pulled out one of the officer's stolen guns and fired a warning shot into the air. The suspects could not be found, following a search of the area by a helicopter and dogs.
At least two guns were stolen by the burglars. Police said some of the officer's stolen property that was dropped during the chase was recovered.
Investigators said it does not appear the officer was targeted in the burglary.
"At this point it appears to be completely random. Like many cities in the Bay Area, our residential burglaries are on the rise and have been for quite a while," Orman said.
Police have not released a description of the suspects. The case remains under investigation.
