Brentwood Police Officer Injured In Struggle Out Of Hospital
BRENTWOOD (BCN) -- A Brentwood police officer who was injured early Sunday morning in a struggle with a suspected drunken driver has been released from the hospital and is expected to make a full recovery, Brentwood police Lt. Doug Silva said Monday.
The incident began around 2 a.m. when officers conducted a traffic stop on a vehicle in a parking lot on Walnut Boulevard near Oak Street, police said.
Silva said the suspect, 21-year-old Brentwood resident Jason Kruenegal, got out of his vehicle and was talking to the officers, but when they tried to ask him questions about whether he was driving under the influence of alcohol, he allegedly fled.
Officers chased him and caught up to him in an alley off of Oak Street.
Investigators are still working out the details of what happened next, but it appears that a struggle occurred and an officer suffears, was taken to a nearby hospital for treatment, police said.
He was released later that morning and is recovering at home Monday, Silva said.
Kruenegal was arrested on suspicion of assault on a peace officer, DUI and possession of a controlled substance, police said. According to Silva, officers suspect that the controlled substance was steroids.
Kruenegal remained in custody Monday on $155,000 bail, a county jail official said.
A passenger who was in the car with him was not arrested, Silva said.
