Brentwood Police Arrest Man For Allegedly Assaulting Officer In Pursuit

BRENTWOOD (CBS SF) – A man who allegedly got into a scuffle with officers and tried to take an officer's gun during a foot pursuit on Wednesday night in Brentwood has been identified by police Thursday as 28-year-old Chase Wright.

Brentwood police said Wright was the suspect they arrested after an incident that began in the area of a Chevron gas station at 336 Oak St. at 9:06 p.m. Wednesday.

An officer at that gas station observed Wright and two other men smoking marijuana and drinking open alcoholic beverages in the parking lot, police said.

The officer confronted the men and while searching them, Wright allegedly pulled away and ran from the officer, police said.

The other two men, who are Brentwood residents, were not cited or arrested, police said.

The officer caught up with Wright about a block away and he allegedly began fighting with the officer, according to police.

He allegedly tried to grab the officer's handgun out of his holster, then broke free and started running again, police said.

Another officer joined in the chase a block away and deployed his Taser stun gun, causing the suspect to fall.

Police said Wright dropped a 9mm pistol onto the ground as he was falling and started wrestling with the officer for it.

After backup officers arrived, he was taken into custody. Police did a subsequent search and recovered three loaded magazines.

Two officers suffered minor injuries as a result of the altercation, police said. They have been treated at a hospital and then released.

Wright, a Brentwood resident, was arrested and booked into Martinez Detention Facility on a number of counts, including assault on a peace officer with a firearm, battery on a peace officer, having a concealed weapon in a vehicle and on a person, as well as three counts related to resisting officers.
