Bomb Threat Forces School Evacuation In Marin's Santa Venetia Area
SAN RAFAEL (CBS SF) - Students were able to return to classes at the Venetia Valley K-8 School in Santa Venetia late Tuesday morning after a bomb threat was called into the campus, authorities said.
The campus, located at 177 N. San Pedro Road near the Marin County Civic Center, was evacuated after the sheriff's office was notified around 7:45 a.m. about the threatening message, which was left overnight, sheriff's Lt. Keith Boyd said.
The school was searched twice with assistance from the San Rafael Police Department, California Highway Patrol and a San Francisco police K-9 unit.
No explosives were found and the school reopened at 10:45 a.m., according to the sheriff's office.
During the search, students and staff had evacuated the building and gone to the nearby San Rafael National Guard Armory at 153 Madison Ave.
Despite discouragement, some parents picked up students during the evacuation. Remaining students were escorted back to the school where classes resumed, according to Theresa Allyn, executive assistant to the San Rafael City Schools superintendent.
Allyn said investigators are working with school officials to determine the source of the phone message.
