Bird Strike Forces Plane To Make Emergency Landing At San Jose Mineta

SAN JOSE (KCBS)—An American airlines flight leaving San Jose to Dallas Friday morning had to return to the airport minutes later for an emergency landing after a bird strike, according to the airline.

American Airlines Flight 1118 left the runway at Mineta San Jose International Airport about 6:20 a.m. but had to return to the airport for the emergency landing.

The MD-80 aircraft landing with just one of two engines running. American reported the pilot powered down the engine as a precaution.

Original reports the engine had failed were incorrect, according to the airline.

"Our firefighters and other personnel in the airport did respond to that aircraft emergency. I'm happy to report that it did land safely," airport spokeswoman Rosemary Barnes told KCBS.

There were no reported injuries.
