Bidding Opens For SF's Central Subway Union Square Station Contract
SAN FRANCISCO (CBS SF) - A major component of San Francisco's $1.6 Billion Central Subway project is up for bid.
When complete in an estimated 7 years, the 1.7 mile Central Subway will connect San Francisco's South of Market to Chinatown. Central Subway service is expected to launch in early 2019. Union Square will be home to one of the line's 4 stations.
"It'll be kind of built in to Union Square, so from the park portion of Union Square, you won't really see it. You'll be on top of it. But down on street level there will be a direct entrance in," explained San Francisco Municipal Transportation Agency director Ed Reiskin.
The Union Square station is expected to cost $210 Million, and will link the subway with BART and Muni Metro.
"The fact that we're at the stage where we're advertising construction contracts means the design work is gone," explained Reiskin. "So, the environmental work is complete, we've already, last year, executed a $233 Million tunnel contract."
