Pomeroy Recreation and Rehabilitation Pool offers swimming lessons, recreation swimming and therapeutic swimming lessons. It caters to everyone from ages six months through adults, and offers lessons for the complete beginner through advanced swimmers. Classes focus on having fun while learning, and the hour-long tot sessions include singing, music and play time. The pool is wheelchair accessible and lessons are offered for people of all physical and mental abilities. Pomeroy also offers special senior classes so even grandma and grandpa can join in the fun.

While adult classes are available, La Petite Baleen Swim School primarily focuses on swimming lessons for children. The school offers weekly half-hour classes for infants as young as two months, and until 36 months of age, children are required to have a parent present in the pool during class. Class sizes are small and lifeguards are on duty. Choose weekday classes for smaller crowds as weekend classes can be very busy. La Petite Baleen also has locations in nearby Half Moon Bay and San Mateo.

The North Beach Swimming Pool is part of the San Francisco Parks & Recreation Department, and is located in the middle of the restaurant district of North Beach. The pool has a huge variety of classes and offers something for everyone from infant and tots, to preschool, to beginning, intermediate and advanced kids, teens and adult lessons. There are also adult water aerobics classes. Two pools are available, one heated where lessons are conducted and one unheated for lap swimming. Bathrooms and showers are available.

Like the North Beach Pool, Garfield Pool is a public pool and part of the San Francisco Parks & Recreation Department. This large, indoor pool has classes for tots and preschoolers, as well as adult and kids classes at six different skill levels. Small children must be accompanied by a parent during lessons, and preschool classes are taught in a one-to-one ratio. Also like the North Beach location, showers and bathrooms are available.

These outdoor rooftop and indoor heated pools connected with the Bakar Fitness & Recreation Center serve the UCSF and surrounding Potrero Hill communities. With fantastic rooftop poolside views of the city and bay, and an adjacent rock climbing wall, Bakar offers 30-minute private and semi-private lessons for individualized attention. Kids lessons are conducted in the indoor pool. Bakar also has a masters swim team a program for adults who come from competitive swim backgrounds looking to increase their fitness. In addition, there is a kids' pre-swim team to prepare younger ones with swimming skills for competition.
