Best Summer Day Camps In San Francisco

cThe city of San Francisco offers no shortage of summer fun for out-of-school kids. With the world at their fingertips, kids in San Francisco can use the summertime to explore everything from the inner lives of zoo animals to how to become a better writer. A wide variety of camps are offered for kids as young as three, through those in high school. Here are five of San Francisco's top summer camps.

One of the Bay Area's larger zoos, the San Francisco Zoo annually offers animal-themed summer camps for kids entering Pre-K through the seventh grade. Camp sessions run from early June through mid-August, with rotating weekly themes to increase variety and interest for campers attending multiple sessions. Topics include everything from exploration of animals throughout the world and migration patterns to how animals move and ecosystems. This summer will feature a brand-new program Wellness 101 Camp for older campers ages 14 through 17, and will focus on interactive animal care, conservation and wellness. Pricing varies by age group, and before and after care is available.

Eureka Valley Arts is a neighborhood arts space for adults and children that offers classes, camps and special events. This summer, from June through August Eureka Valley Arts will be holding weeklong sessions of summer camp for school-age children. Camp sessions are focused around art and adventure with a different theme each week, ranging from ceramics to animals. Camp is perfect for adventurous active kids and includes field trips to fun locations like Six Flags or the Santa Cruz Beach Boardwalk, as well as daily trips to the park. The daily schedule runs from 9:00 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. and before and after hours care is available.

San Francisco Junior Giants Baseball Camp

The San Francisco Giants Community Fund runs a juniors baseball program open to girls and boys aged 5 to 18. Each year, the program holds summer camps for kids ages three-and-a-half through 12, and offers both half and full day options. Camps are held at multiple locations throughout the Bay Area, with two San Francisco-based sessions. Each camper will enjoy professional-level baseball instruction in addition to an official San Francisco Giants Baseball Camp uniform, chartered VIP visit to AT&T Park, and a meet and greet with one of the Giants.

Ripe Fruit Creative Writing Camp

Ripe Fruit is a progressive workshop and class-based program that provides education for and the development of creative writers. This summer Ripe Fruit will offer two different summer based programs for teens interested in improving their creative writing skills. Kids ages 11 through 15 can participate in either morning or afternoon week-long sessions, while high schoolers can opt for one day intensive sessions in either July or August. Campers will receive encouragement and instruction, as well as inspiration in a variety of avenues from fiction to poetry.

Nature Nurture is dedicated to fostering children's exploration of the world through the outdoors. Summer camp is offered mid-June through mid-August for kids aged three through six. Leader spots are also available for campers age seven and older. Each camp session involves a variety of fun activities and adventures throughout the San Francisco Presidio. Kids will enjoy hands-on activities and exploration through stories, teamwork and games, while learning to appreciate and care for the natural environment.
