Some mini golf spots are designed around a theme such as a haunted graveyard or Bay Area landmarks, while others share space with a bar or arcade. Subpar is an indoor 18-hole miniature golf course located in Alameda. The course design showcases a running theme that incorporates various Bay Area landmarks into each hole. The Subpar facility also houses pool tables, slot cars and an arcade. Head out after 7:30 p.m. on Friday and Saturday nights for glow in the dark rounds of mini golf.

San Francisco's take on indoor miniature golf can be found at Urban Putt. This city hotspot provides kid style fun in a more grown-up atmosphere. While McInnis Park is probably better known for its 9-hole golf course and driving range, the San Rafael center is also home to an 18-hole outdoor mini golf course. The family-friendly course is open seven days a week until 7 p.m. and is nestled in lush landscaping. Adults and kids 12 and up are just $8, and kids under 4 play for free. The McInnis center also has batting cages, a driving range, golf shop and a golf academy.

A long time Santa Cruz Beach Boardwalk landmark, the Buccaneer Bay miniature golf course is located inside Neptune's Kingdom. The 18-hole course spans two stories of piratey fun and includes a number of new black light lit holes. Buccaneer Bay course admission is only $5 per person, and is open late on the weekends. Scoring is made simple using the new Boardwalk Mini Golf smartphone app.
