Best European Spring Break Destinations

When spring break arrives, many college students look forward to heading somewhere tropical. Popular destinations include places in the Bahamas, Mexico, Caribbean, Hawaii, Florida and other tropical areas. Though not tropical, Europe offers plenty of exciting spring break opportunities for college students taking a break from their studies. European destinations can offer everything from a countryside retreat to a big city adventure.

Capri, Italy

Capri offers an island escape without the craziness of big European cities like Amsterdam and London. This is the perfect destination in Italy for college students looking to relax and enjoy a luxurious beachside vacation. You will be feeling stuffed from all of the amazing Italian dinners you're sure to enjoy from the local restaurants. This area is also rich in history and the perfect destination for history majors to experience it in person. Between beach lounging sessions, stroll through the island's central piazza, Piazza Umberto I, and explore Renaissance-era churches. Or see Villa Jovis, the remains of Roman Emporer Tiberius' villa. Though Capri is not a party destination, it is a must-visit for college students looking for a beachside vacation away from the parties of the Caribbean, Miami and Cabo. There are numerous popular beaches to visit on Capri, including Bagni Nettuno, Marina Piccola and Punta Carena.

Amsterdam, Netherlands

When you think of partying in Europe, chances are visiting Amsterdam comes to mind. This capital city of the Netherlands is very laid back, offering a variety of things that many people do not have access to back home. This is why so many college students make their way to Amsterdam for their spring break getaways. Do not be surprised if you see someone smoking weed in public, this is common practice and it is legal. In addition to being very liberal, Amsterdam is also a very affordable destination for broke college students. There are a variety of affordable hotels and hostels throughout the city.

While there, you can visit the Sex Museum or stroll along the cobblestone streets window shopping. Whether you are backpacking your way across Europe or just spending your spring break week in the city, this is the place to go for a break from day-to-day studies.

Algarve, Portugal

Visiting Algarve, Portugal not only offers a historic insight to this coastal city, it also offers a lively nightlife atmosphere. College students will have fun exploring and shopping in the area during the day and then partying all night until the sun comes up. While in Algarve, you can visit the casinos and take shots while tanning on the beaches. There are also discos, which are a lot more fun than they sound. There are many beachside resorts designed for those wanting to relax during the day and party throughout the evening. With great weather throughout the year, Algarve is the perfect destination for those looking for beautiful spring break weather.

St. Moritz, Switzerland

For those wanting to get away for break, you can't get much further than the place dubbed "The Top of the World." Those looking to hit the slopes for break will want to make plans to visit St. Moritz in Switzerland. This location offers some of the best slopes in Europe in a small town built around the local ski culture. Don't worry — those still wanting to bring their swimsuits with them will be able to wear them as they take a dip in the hot springs in the area. College students wanting to experience the luxury of a glamorous getaway will want to visit St. Mortiz. There, they will be treated with friendly service in a setting that makes all visitors feel like they are a VIP or royalty.

Istanbul, Turkey

Visit a contemporary culture that coexists with centuries of history. Istanbul, Turkey, offers plenty of upscale eateries and swanky nightclubs. This makes the destination perfect for college students looking for a place to go for spring break. Everything from the unique architecture of the ancient monuments to the local culture will make this a one-of-a-kind spring break escape. Students can explore museums, bazaars and other landmarks during the day and then put their party outfits on for a night of dancing, dining and being entertained.

Spring break is a time when college students take a break from their studies and experience life. Many travel to tropical destinations, including the Bahamas, Jamaica and Mexico. Though there is plenty to see closer to home, there is so much more to see, do and experience in Europe. If possible, students should enjoy a spring break getaway in Europe.
