Best Dog Bars In San Francisco

Some cities can be pretty uptight when it comes to bringing your favorite pooch into a local bar. San Francisco is friendlier than most. There are many places throughout the city where dogs are not only welcome, they have amenities like water bowls, treats and often run of the place, including a seat at the bar itself. Of course, at the other end of the leash are human owners who are looking for an enjoyable atmosphere and their favorite beverage as well.

Rogue Ales Public House
673 Union St.
San Francisco, CA 94133

This Washington Square location offers a lot to like for dogs and their owners. It's a family-friendly pub with food, games and a good selection of craft beers on tap. Rogue's offers a dog-friendly patio complete with water and a selection of treats that includes something to really drool over — bacon. After all of the fun, you can take your dog to nearby Washington Square Park and let him/her romp in the grass with other four-footed friends.

The Sea Star
2289 3rd St.
San Francisco, CA 94107

No list of dog-friendly bars in San Francisco would be complete without at least one in Dogpatch. The Sea Star reopened last year after a remodel and another change of owners (one of whom owns a second dog-friendly bar in the city). The entire bar is open to dogs. Treats and a water bowl are always available. Flat screen TVs, a pool table, an Internet jukebox and a surprisingly good selection of top-shelf liquor and beers make this fun for humans, too.

Etcetera Wine Bar
795 Valencia St.
San Francisco, CA 94110
(415) 926-5477

It might seem surprising that a wine bar can be dog-friendly, but Etcetera is no ordinary place. The French owner, Alexandra Gertais, spent more than a decade in the wine business and has created a unique space in the hip Valencia corridor that features tapas-style food choices and a great selection of interesting wines from around the world. There are a couple of dog-friendly tables reserved in the front and smaller, well-behaved dogs are also allowed inside. While your faithful companion drinks from a water bowl, sip some excellent wine and gaze at the unusual antique map printed on tiles in the bar's ceiling.

Holy Water
309 Courtland Ave.
San Francisco, CA 94110
(415) 638-6129

This dog friendly watering hole is notable for décor you won't find in a lot of other establishments. A rope ceiling over the bar and shelves that actually used to hold holy water in churches contributes to the experience. You will usually find plenty of dogs milling around, either before or after their unleashed romp in nearby Holly Park. Holy Water offers an innovative drink menu for specialty cocktails and a nice relaxed vibe.

The Homestead
2301 Folsom St.
San Francisco, CA 94110
(415) 282-4663
www.homesteadsf.com

The Homestead is one of the oldest bars in San Francisco, dating back to 1906, and it was reputed to be a speakeasy during Prohibition. An old pot-bellied stove in the corner and a hardwood bar with an ancient cash register add to the historic atmosphere. Dogs can enjoy treats from accommodating bartenders and quench their thirst from a water bowl by the jukebox. Their owners will enjoy a wide range of cheap to expensive drinks, including an impressive whiskey selection, while gazing at the buxom images on the walls.
