Bus Stop, since 1900, San Francisco (credit: Laurie Jo Miller Farr)

This topic always gets plenty of wide-flung votes for lots of favorite sports bars. The "best" is really wherever you and your friends are having the best time. And it doesn't hurt when the beer's cold, the wings and tacos are hot and your school is winning. Catch every minute of college football action at these sports bars in San Francisco.

Separated by a two-minute walk from its younger Union Street neighbor, this friendly saloon has been doing something right since 1900. It's a casual place where no frills extends to no kitchen, so bringing your own food is allowed. There's a generous number of televisions, tables and stools for good sized crowds, two pool tables and a twice daily happy hour on Tuesdays.

Kezar Pub calls itself San Francisco's number one sports bar. Plus, there's more than a few fans giving it top billing for the city's best crispy buffalo wings (SF Chronicle agrees). At last count, the flat screen TVs number at 20. Arrive early when a big game is on, surround yourself with Kezar Stadium and old 49ers memorabilia, order your favorite beer and enjoy.

You know you're in the Marina when Sunday is packed for brunch, Tuesday is trivia night, Thursday is $2 night (tacos, shots, bottled beer) and the college game is on. There are tons of TVs in this large place that's become a neighborhood legend since opening in the summer of '10. People like The Brick Yard's game-day munchies, giving a shout out to its fried chicken and nachos. Tables can be reserved and there's a patio out back for hanging out after the game.

There's complete satellite sports coverage for all of the college games in this well-known corner of Russian Hill. No frills, no food, but the walls are covered with 25 flat-screen televisions plus two big screen TVs. Regulars bring their own food and sense a fun. If you're not at Stanford Stadium, how about instead being in front of an enormous 82-inch screen? Fans of Northwestern, University of Washington, Cal, Oregon, Notre Dame and Michigan State are never far away either. Credited five years ago with reviving the city sports bar scene with a heavy dose of good food, the beer buckets, pints and pitchers are crowd pleasers no matter what the score. Besides Pac-12 Network, The Republic has happy hour Monday, taco Tuesday, wing Wednesday, trivia Thursday and funky music Friday in its weekly lineup.

The Taco Shop at Underdogs

The Sunset District harbors Michigan fans, and it's no secret that one of them owns this popular place. Ten plasma screens, the Big 10, Taco Tuesdays done Nick's Way, gorgeous guacamole, secret sauces (watch that green one) and specials on the beer buckets is what you'll find. "Still working out which beers," was the state-of-play as The Taco Shop at Underdogs was planning weeks ahead for a great college football season. This spot is a nice change of pace one block south of Golden Gate Park at 19th Avenue.
