Berkeley Move-In Day
BERKELEY, Calif. (KCBS) _ It's an annual ritual at UC Berkeley as thousands of incoming freshmen began moving in and setting up shop in their new dorm rooms on Sunday.
Many rolled in their stuff in huge carts, excited about the start of college life.
UC's Marty Takimoto said it will be more than 4,000 freshmen, many coming from farther away than usual.

"As a compensation for the growing budget woes for the university, we've admitted more out-of-state and international students," he said. "So we're going to have a more diverse student population in terms of geographic areas."
For example, Stephen Kaplan from South Brunswick, New Jersey. His parents went to Rutgers, his sister is at Princeton, but he is now a Golden Bear.
"I applied to a couple of Ivy League schools, but I guess that didn't work out," Kaplan said. "I'm studying engineering so I really wanted to come out here because Cal's a pretty good school for that."
His mom Maureen said Berkeley is a long way from New Jersey.
"He's my last child to leave home. I live in a big four-bedroom house all by myself, so I'll miss him," she said. "But he's very independent and he'll do well so I'm very happy for him."
Those out-of-state students pay $17,000 more a year in tuition than students from California.
