Belmont Police Arrest Man For Hit-And-Run That Sparked Grass Fire
BELMONT (CBS SF) -- A driver was arrested for hit-and-run after his vehicle collided with a utility pole in Belmont causing a grass fire and knocking out power in the area on Friday afternoon, according to police.
At 5:10 p.m. on Friday, Belmont police and fire units responded to a report of a vehicle that had struck a utility pole in the 300 block of El Camino Real.
According to police, callers reported that a fire had started at the scene of the collision and that the driver of the vehicle was fleeing the scene.
Officers arrived at the collision on El Camino Real near Belmont Avenue and found that a 1990 Ford truck had sheared off a utility pole and a grass fire was burning along the east side of the roadway.
According to police, the driver, described as a Hispanic male in a black jacket, was not at the scene when police arrived.
Officers located the driver of the vehicle a couple blocks away.
Aron Bacaquiroa, 24, of Redwood City, was located on Pacific Boulevard, just north of 42nd Avenue in San Mateo, police said.
Bacaquiroa was arrested for a hit-and-run collision and driving while unlicensed, according to police.
Bacaquiroa was not injured in the collision. He told investigators that he fell asleep while driving.
Firefighters extinguished the grass fire, which spread to about 1,000 square feet of grass, caused by falling electrical wires, police said.
The collision interrupted power for about an hour to about 4,000 customers in northwest Belmont, police said.
