Bear Mauls NorCal Woman Trying To Save Her Golden Retriever (VIDEO)
BUTTE COUNTY (CBS SF) -- A Northern California neighborhood is on high-alert after a woman survived a bear attack outside her home in Butte County.
The Magalia resident says she tried to stop the bear from attacking her Golden Retriever in front of her garage when the bear turned on her.
She escaped and is recovering with a few scrapes, bruises and bites. But her dog was not so lucky.
"The dog was in pretty rough shape and was still at the vet and they're working on it to try to get her better," said Patrick Foy, with the Department of Fish and Wildlife.
The department and USDA set up a bear trap in the woman's yard.
They say if the bear is caught, they'll euthanize it as standard protocol after an animal hurts a human.
Meanwhile, they're asking the neighborhood to carry a whistle to scare off the bear in case it returns.
