'Bay Lights' LED Sculpture Set To Illuminate Bay Bridge
SAN FRANCISCO (KCBS) — Art and technology come together starting Tuesday night on the Bay Bridge as "The Bay Lights" will be officially unveiled. The highly-anticipated display will light up the suspension span for a two-year-run.
At 9 p.m. after opening ceremonies, internationally known LED light sculptor Leo Villareal will switch on 25,000 white lights covering the western span of the bridge on the north-facing side, all from his laptop.
Amy Critchett, executive producer of The Bay Lights, called it the world's largest LED contemporary sculpture.

So far the dress rehearsals, which have been going on since January, have received rave reviews.
Over the past two years, Villareal designed rhythms and patterns for the lights that will be in motion. The patterns will evolve over the two years they will be up and will never repeat.
Crichett said the Bay Bridge is loved, but so far hasn't been considered as memorable as the Golden Gate Bridge.

"It's so amazing because in conversations that I've had with people along the way; people love The Bay Bridge. They just kind of don't remember that they love the Bay Bridge," she said.
