Bay Bridge Repairs From Tanker Grazing Will Cost $3M, Take Four Months
SAN FRANCISCO (KCBS)— Construction crews are bobbing up and down on San Francisco Bay trying to fix the damage done when a ship hit one of the towers of the Bay Bridge two weeks ago. According to Caltrans it will cost $3 million to replace the barrier and take four months to do the job.
Caltrans took the media out on a boat on Friday, where spokesman Bob Haus showed the gashed wooden bumper that was torn away when it was grazed by the oil tanker called, Overseas Raymar on January 8th.
From the water taxi, the media was shown workers removing the shattered wood where a new fender will go in. They're using steel and plastic to guard the concrete tower from future collisions.

Haus said the tower is fine, and the good news is that the tanker didn't have any oil in it. But he said the work would pose some challenges.
"It is specialized labor and it is very difficult when you're working on water," Haus said.
It's the second time in recent years that a tanker has struck the bridge after the Cosco Busan tanker oil spill of 2007.
