Bay Bridge Landscapers Paying Good Prices For Perfect Palm Trees
SUISUN CITY (CBS) -- The new Bay Bridge will be more than cement and suspension.
Soon there will be some greenery to go with it. The challenge now - finding it.
Bay Bridge arborists are canvassing Bay Area neighborhoods in search of the perfect palm. One neighborhood was in Suisun City where David Kling lives.
Bay Bridge developers spotted two Canary Island date palms right in of his house and made Kling an offer he couldn't refuse.
They will be among 88 others to decorate the median of the eastern side of the new Bay Bridge
Kling said, "when we found out they were going on the Bay Bridge - to be part of something when we are long gone - that's pretty awesome!"
But first Klings 30 foot palms had to be tested for health and vigor.
"They came out here with a big ladder truck and they pulled some samples," said Kling.
Finding healthy palms is no easy task. The Canary Island date palms are bold and beautiful but finicky, too. They are prone to disease if they don't get just the right TLC. In fact, some other date palms tracked down in the Bay Area didn't pass. Klings did!
Kling doesn't mind parting with his palms. He said to be honest they are pretty high maintenance.
Kling said there is something to be said for his local roots by the new Bay Bridge. He will be compensated between $1,000 to $1500 per tree.
