Bay Area's Only Filipino Mayor Organizing Relief Efforts In Milpitas For Typhoon Victims
MILPITAS (KCBS) — As the death toll mounts in the Philippines from Typhoon Haiyan, the Bay Area's only Filipino mayor is making an appeal for more aid be sent to the disaster-ravaged country.
Mayor Jose Esteves said Filipinos are united in the aiding in the collection effort, no matter what part of the island nation they are from, and he is doing his part to lead in some of those efforts.
"Everybody's impacted because the Filipino community is one. We feel for one another. We are not [regionalists]. I feel very impacted, so do the many Filipino-Americans here in the Bay Area," he said.
According to the mayor, a number of collection sites have been set up in Milpitas.
"We have a sister city in the Philippines— Dagupan City in the north, and we plan to send whatever money we collected to them for assistance. Our church, St. John's Catholic Church is doing a second collection this weekend."
The local Knights of Columbus organization will also be collecting money and supplies to send to the Philippines.
