Bay Area Relates To Magnitude 5.7 Turkish Quake
(CBS SF / CNN Wire) -- As much as here in Northern California, earthquakes are a fact of geological life in Turkey, which experienced a magnitude 5.7 quake on Wednesday - its second major tremor in a couple of weeks.
Officials said at least three people died and 50 more remained buried under rubble from the quake that struck in eastern Turkey about 9 miles south of the town of Van.
At least 18 buildings had collapsed in Van, including two hotels and one school, state-run television TRT said.
Officials also reported an aftershock of magnitude 4.4.
Parts of eastern Turkey, including the area around Van, were devastated by a magnitude 7.2 earthquake on October 23, which killed more than 500 people.
