CHP: Bay Area Holiday Weekend Traffic Deaths Up, DUI Arrests Down
SAN FRANCISCO (CBS SF) -- Arrests by the California Highway Patrol for driving under the influence so far for the Memorial Day weekend dropped slightly from last year's total both statewide and in the Bay Area.
The CHP arrested 1,133 drivers throughout the state for alleged drunken driving between 6 p.m. Friday and 6 a.m. today, down from 1,161 arrested for that time period in 2012.
In the Bay Area, 165 people were arrested on suspicion of DUI as of this morning compared to 166 last year, according to the CHP's preliminary report.
However, the Bay Area had recorded two traffic deaths up to then for the weekend, one more than in 2012, the CHP reported.
Fifteen people have died in traffic accidents - including four on motorcycles -- in all of California so far while only 11 died in vehicle mishaps by that point last year.
The CHP noted that six of the people killed in car crashes in its jurisdiction were not wearing safety belts, the CHP reported.
