Bay Area Hotel Workers Rally Against Working Conditions
SANTA CLARA (KCBS) – Workers and labor leaders were out in force in both Santa Clara and San Francisco on Labor Day, protesting what they consider poor working conditions at Hyatt hotels.
There are approximately 250 workers at the Hyatt Regency in Santa Clara and organizers of Monday's rally said they have been trying to organize for three years, as the hotel remains non-union.
KCBS' Betsy Gebhart Reports:
Katy Rose, a spokesperson for the organizing group, said housekeepers face excessive workloads, which has led to injuries, and there is lack of access to affordable health care.
"Many workers have reported that they can't afford the health insurance plans that are offered," Rose said.
A representative of the Hyatt Regency Santa Clara said the hotel could not comment on the issues brought up by Monday's rally.
Rallies were also held at Hyatt hotels in San Francisco on Monday.
