Bay Area Courses Suffer As Golfers Cut Back
SAN RAFAEL (KCBS) - 2010 was the year when most of us cut back on our discretionary spending, much to the disappointment of your local neighborhood golf course.
Petaluma's Adobe Creek Golf Course had to close its doors earlier this month due to loan defaults. Unfortunately, said Chris Thomas, executive director and chief operating officer for the Northern California Pro Golfer's Association, it's an industry-wide problem.
KCBS' Mark Seelig Reports:
"We have reached a point where we have too much supply, and not quite enough demand," said Thomas.
He says the key is to keep afloat by any means necessary until the economy rebounds. That's what they're doing at Peacock Gap Golf Course in San Rafael.
"We've done a few things to maintain a level of business by offering online deals through Golf Now," said Head Pro at Peacock, Adam Eisner.
Eisner says the proactive approach has worked, resulting in more golfers this year than last, but because they're doling out deals, revenues are down a bit.
