Bay Area Cities Honor 9/11 Victims, First Responders
UNION CITY (KPIX 5) -- Remembrances and moments of silence were held Wednesday around the Bay Area as people reflected on the twelfth anniversary of the terror attacks on September 11th, 2001.
A United Airlines Flight 93 memorial remembrance ceremony was held in Union City, and Mayor Carol Dutra-Vernaci attended along with family members of three victims who had had been on the plane.
The 10 a.m. ceremony at the memorial was meant in part to honor the 33 passengers and seven crew members who were aboard the flight, which was headed for San Francisco International Airport when it crashed on 9/11.
The San Francisco Fire Department also held remembrance ceremonies for first responders at all of the department's 43 city fire stations.
Flag-raising and bell-ringing ceremonies were held for the times when the attacks happened in New York starting at 6:45 a.m.
At 7:02 a.m. the names of 343 fallen New York firefighters and first-responders were read.
Fire Chief Joanne Hayes-White attended the ceremony at Fire Station 7 at 2300 Folsom Street.
