Bay Area Bicycle Share To Launch Pilot In August With 700 Bikes
SAN FRANCISCO (KCBS)— A bike-sharing pilot program is set to launch in the Bay Area starting in August with 700 bikes at docking stations in five cities.
Stations will be located in San Jose, San Francisco, Palo Alto, Redwood City and Mountain View.
Karen Schkolnick, with the Bay Area Air Quality Management District, said the pilot program is currently scheduled to last one to two years and that officials hope it will help combat pollution and climate change.
"Our hope is that it is successful and, if it is, we would certainly seek to expand the duration of the project," said Schkolnick.

"In the Bay Area the transportation factor counts for more than 50 percent of air pollution and greenhouse gas emission, so significant reductions from transportation can help the Bay Area to attain and maintain state and national standards," she said.
The bike-sharing program is intended to encourage people to use public transit by providing the bikes for short trips. There will be 35 docking stations in San Francisco, 20 in San Jose and the rest in the other cities.
