Bay Area Airports Brace For Thanksgiving Travel
SAN FRANCISCO (KCBS)- It's almost the time of year when things get especially busy at Bay Area airports where the Thanksgiving rush is expected to include more than a million people.
Some travelers are getting a jump on the crowds by leaving as early as a week before the big day.
KCBS' Chris Filippi Reports:
"You just take it in stride," said one woman at SFO. "I'm really not that worried about it. It's worth going, even if I'm late."
The crowds aren't bad now, but that could change quickly through the weekend. Nearly 1.4 million people are expected to use San Francisco International Airport from Friday through the Monday after Thanksgiving. SFO Spokesman Mike McCarron said that would be a four percent increase over last year.
"Most airports are seeing a double digit decrease, and for the past three or four years we've set a steady two, three, or four percent increase, and we're very pleased with that," said McCarron.
McCarron said that Monday is expected to be the busiest day of the Thanksgiving week, but that could change as more people book last minute flights.
Oakland International is expecting a two percent increase in holiday travel, and San Jose expects roughly the same number of travelers as last year.
