Battery Stun Earthquakes 1-0 In U.S. Open Cup Soccer
CHARLESTON, S.C. (CBS/AP) — Charleston Battery captain Colin Falvey scored the lone goal in the 74th minute, lifting the USL Pro team past the San Jose Earthquakes 1-0 Tuesday night in the third round of the U.S. Open Cup.
Falvey scored on a header, sending Charleston to its ninth victory over an MLS opponent. The Battery advances to face Real Salt Lake on June 12.
Odisnel Cooper got the shutout for Charleston.
The goal was scored after Zach Prince was dragged down on the left side. Midfielder Jose Cuevas curled his free kick into the box and Falvey snapped a header past goalkeeper David Bingham.
San Jose piled on the pressure in the last 10 minutes but could not find a way past the Battery defense. The Earthquakes finished with 10 men because center back Brad Ring received two yellow cards.
