Battered Salvadoran Woman Faces Deportation From Mountain View Home
MOUNTAIN VIEW (AP) - A Salvadoran woman who fled to the United States to escape an abusive husband is facing imminent deportation.
Medrano's lawyer says 44-year-old Irma Medrano, who has lived in Mountain View since illegally entering the country 15 years ago, is in danger if she's forced to return to El Savador, where her husband has been looking for her.
Attorney Aubra Fletcher told the San Francisco Chronicle that authorities have refused to allow Medrano to apply for political asylum and she could be deported as early as Tuesday.
U.S. officials dispute Medrano's claim that her life would be in danger in El Salvador.
But her lawyer says relatives say her husband has come to look for her after learning deportation was imminent.
