Basketball Bias? Bay Area CBS Staff Has Soft Spot For Underdogs In NCAA Tournament
SAN FRANCISCO (CBS SF) - Since Sunday, you've been bombarded with the term "Braketology," as experts tried to tell you who would advance in the NCAA Tournament. But who did you pick when you were alone in the semi-privacy of your own cubicle? If you are anything like the CBS TV and radio hosts you love Stanford, but aren't a big fan of number one seeds.
Only 4 of the 20 CBS local VIPs who entered an online bracket picked a number one team to win it all, with not one person picking Virginia to be the last one standing at the end of the big dance. Only KCBS morning anchor Stan Bunger thought the undefeated Wichita State Shockers would win it all.
A composite look at the picks from the staffs of KPIX 5, KCBS Radio, Radio Allice, 997 [Now] and Live 105 reveal that number 1 seeds Arizona and Florida are popular picks to make the Final Four, but only 20 percent of the staff thought those teams had what it takes to win it all. Michigan, Michigan State Villanova and Louisville were predicted to knock off higher seeded teams to made deep runs in the tournament.
Not surprisingly, the picks also show a bias toward West Coast teams, with Stanford considered by many a safe pick to upset higher seeded New Mexico in the 1st round. UCLA, San Diego State and Oregon will also be moving on, according to our experts.
The biggest Cinderella champion picks were 5th seeded Oklahoma (picked by Hooman from the Alice morning crew) and 6th seed Baylor (picked by Jason of 997 Now).
