BART police officer shoots suspect in Union City station parking lot
A Bay Area Rapid Transit police officer shot and injured a suspect at Union City station Monday night, the agency reported.
BART police said two officers responded to a reckless driving report in the station parking lot shortly before 9 p.m. During an attempted traffic stop, the driver attempted to assault the officers and one of the officers shot the driver in the chest.
The driver was identified as 32-year-old Union City resident Jasmine Gao. She was taken to the hospital and was in serious but stable condition. She is expected to survive.
The station was closed Monday night during the shooting investigation, BART said. Officials confirmed that the BART Police Department's Office of the Independent Police Auditor was notified and responded to the scene for their investigation.
"Right now, I believe that BART is safe. These incidents are infrequent on BART and they are investigated in our full capabilities," said BART Police Chief Kevin Franklin during a press conference to address the shooting Tuesday morning.
Police said once released, Gao will face multiple charges, including assault with a deadly weapon on an officer, reckless evading, failure to follow a court order and resisting arrest with the enhancement of committing a felony while out on her own recognizance. She also had two outstanding warrants.
