Baby Boy, Father Shot, Killed Inside Oakland Home
OAKLAND (CBS SF) -- The aunt of a man who was shot to death in East Oakland along with his 1-year-old son early Wednesday said she believes the killings may be related to the shooting death of the father's 18-year-old cousin early Saturday.
Konya Baylis, 33, identified the 20-year-old man killed in this morning's shooting as her nephew Andrew Thomas and the 1-year-old as Drew Jackson.
The shooting happened around 2:45 a.m. Wednesday at the home in the 400 block of Ghormley Avenue where Baylis said she has lived for about three and a half years.
Baylis said there were many people in her house when the shooting occurred, including her boyfriend, her mother, her mother's boyfriend and a number of nephews, nieces and young children.
She said she was sleeping when she was awakened by the sound of about eight shots being fired. She got up and was told by her sister that Drew had been shot. She quickly learned that Thomas had been wounded as well.
Thomas had been shot in the face or neck and Drew was shot in the face, Baylis said.
She said Thomas and Drew lived in Fresno but were staying with her for a few days because they had attended a birthday party for Thomas' 2-year-old sister in Oakland over the weekend.
She said they extended their stay because Thomas' cousin, 18-year-old Alquino Rivera, was killed in a shooting Saturday morning, and they were planning to attend Rivera's funeral.
That shooting was reported at 11:09 a.m. in the 800 block of Ney Avenue.
Baylis said, "I think the shootings are possibly connected because Andrew and Al hung out together."
But Baylis said she doesn't know why someone would have been upset at Thomas and Rivera, because she thinks they were good people.
Baylis said Thomas, who would have turned 21 on Sept. 6, "wasn't a bad kid" and had attended Castlemont High School in East Oakland. She said he didn't graduate but was planning to take general education development courses to complete his high school education.
Baylis also said Rivera "was a good person, too, and didn't get into too much trouble."

She said he was attending a private high school in Oakland and was planning to graduate in December.
Baylis said her sister, who is Thomas' mother, decided to move to Fresno four years ago after Thomas' cousin, 21-year-old Webster Johnson IV, was fatally shot in the 1900 block of 90th Avenue in East Oakland at about 3:53 p.m. on Aug. 27, 2009.
